Rubies, the birthstone of July, are one of the most valuable gems of all time, dating back to more than 2,500 years ago. Some of the world’s most famous Crown Jewels are set with Rubies. This sought after gem was so loved by the Emperor of India that whenever a Ruby crystal was found, the emperor sent a group of his men to meet the stone and welcome it in style. The Ruby was also considered to have special powers and was worn by royalty as a talisman against evil.
A Ruby is made of corundum which is the second hardest mineral, after the Diamond. Rubies come in a variety of hues, from an orangey red to a purplish red, but they are most valuable when in a true red color.
